Few buildings in Boston carry as much Revolutionary history as the Old South Meeting House, shown here under the title Old South Church. Completed in 1729, it was among the largest gathering places in colonial Boston, and in December 1773 crowds filled it to protest the tea tax before the Boston Tea Party. After the congregation moved to Back Bay in 1875, a preservation group saved the building from demolition, and it has since operated as a museum. The photograph dates from between 1900 and 1920, when the meeting house stood as a landmark among the busy streets of downtown Boston.
