A newsboy in Boston is the focus here, and the title, "flipping cars," suggests he hopped on and off moving streetcars to reach passengers with papers. The picture dates to October 1909 and is attributed to Lewis Hine, who was then working for the National Child Labor Committee and photographing young workers in cities across the country. Newsboys were among his most frequent subjects, and his images helped build the public case for limiting child labor. The attribution rests on the print's provenance rather than a signature, so it is worth keeping in mind when reading the record.
