Brookline, five miles from Boston, is shown here from a raised vantage point above the road, a standard device of the bird's-eye views that were popular in the 1850s. The engraving appeared in Gleason's Pictorial in 1854, the illustrated weekly published in Boston that carried views of New England towns and famous buildings. Its signature credits the drawing to Wilkie and the engraving to S.E. Brown. Brookline was then a largely rural town of farms and country estates, and the elevated angle lets the viewer read the street layout, the scattered houses, and the surrounding fields at a glance.
