Before its move across the Charles River to Cambridge in 1916, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology occupied a Back Bay site on Boylston Street, and this c1901 view records the school in that earlier setting. The image is a photochrom, a color process that Detroit Publishing Co. used to produce its views of American cities and landmarks. The company compiled these prints in an album that served as a sales catalog in its office, so the picture was made to be shown and selected by customers. Its color comes from multiple lithographic stones, and the result reflects the era's interest in color as a way to make distant places feel vivid.
