Two boys are caught in the act of hitching rides on the back of a streetcar, the kind of stunt the title "Flipping Cars" refers to. The photograph is attributed to Lewis Hine, who documented child labor and street life for the National Child Labor Committee in the years around 1909, and the caption card suggests that the reformers saw this mischief as part of a larger concern. By then electric streetcars had become the main way to cross Boston's crowded streets, and boys who clung to moving cars risked falls and collisions with other traffic. The picture offers a quick look at how children made use of the city's busy streets.
