Old South Church stands on Boston's Washington Street, and this stereograph captures its brick and stone facade and tall spire as they appeared in 1897. Stereo cards like this one were made to be viewed through a special lens, which gave the scene a sense of depth that flat photographs could not. The card was produced by Alfred S. Campbell of Elizabeth, New Jersey, a commercial maker of such views, and its caption data has not been independently verified. Built in 1729, the church was a center of Puritan worship and later a gathering place during the Revolutionary era, which makes it one of the city's most storied landmarks.
