Few Boston buildings carry as much Revolutionary history as the Old South Meeting House, the brick Puritan meetinghouse on Washington Street, completed in 1729. In December 1773, a crowd filled its walls to protest the tax on tea, and the gathering that followed the Boston Tea Party began there. By the 1870s the congregation had moved away and the building faced possible demolition, so this view records a landmark at a moment of uncertainty. The halftone reproduction appeared in a series of historical study pictures, which helped teach students about the city's colonial past.
