The Old South Meeting House on Milk Street in Boston is the subject here, a brick building whose history runs back to 1729, when its congregation first gathered there. Its best-known moment came in December 1773, when colonists met in the hall to protest the tea tax and the gathering set the Boston Tea Party in motion. The photograph is a WPA Architecture Project record, so it was made during the Depression-era survey of American buildings, and the caption card carries no date, so the exact year of the picture is unknown. Look closely at the building's steeple and brickwork, which show how a meetinghouse of the colonial period was preserved and recorded in the 1930s.
