This is a sectional drawing cut along line G-G, showing the building at its sixth landing, which points to the interior stair and framing rather than the meetinghouse's public spaces. The Old South Meeting House was built in 1729 for the Old South Church, a Puritan congregation, and its sturdy timber structure has stood at the corner of Washington and Milk streets for nearly three centuries. The building became famous in 1773, when thousands of colonists gathered there to protest the British tax on tea, and the meeting spilled out into the streets before the Boston Tea Party. Its survival owes much to later preservation efforts that saved it from demolition.
