These architectural drawings show the upper stages of the steeple at Old South Meeting House, the Boston church whose congregation dates to 1669 and whose brick meetinghouse was completed in 1729. The plans for landings 8 and 9 map the framing and levels that rise above the main roof, the part of the tower that gave the building its visual presence over Washington Street. The building's best-known moment came in December 1773, when thousands of colonists gathered inside to protest the British tea tax before the Boston Tea Party. Drawings like these help explain how a structure with that history was built and later maintained as part of Boston National Historical Park.
