Beneath the branches of Liberty Tree, the great elm on Essex Street where Bostonians had gathered to protest British taxes, stands the obelisk this print depicts. It marks the celebrations of 1766, when news of the Stamp Act's repeal reached the colony. Paul Revere's engraving records a public victory that Bostonians saw as proof that sustained colonial protest could force Parliament to back down. The Library's impression is a restrike made in 1839 or later, so it reflects how the design was remembered and reproduced long after the original event.
