This view is taken from the deck of the steamer Cambria as it approached Boston, so the monument appears as travelers arriving by sea would have first seen it, rising above the Charlestown shore. The obelisk commemorates the Battle of Bunker Hill, fought in June 1775 at the start of the Revolutionary War, though the battle was actually fought on nearby Breed's Hill. Construction took many years and was finished in 1843, when the granite shaft was dedicated with a famous oration by Daniel Webster. Its slim granite form became one of the earliest large-scale monuments in the United States, and it remains a landmark of the harbor.
