Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown, Massachusetts, 1850, shows a granite shaft that had stood over the battlefield for only a few years. Work began with a cornerstone laid in 1825 on the fiftieth anniversary of the battle, with the Marquis de Lafayette present, and the obelisk was finished in 1842. Its blocks were quarried at Quincy and hauled by the Granite Railway, one of the earliest railroads built for commercial freight in the country. In 1850, Charlestown was a separate city across the river from Boston, with shipyards and the Navy Yard nearby, and residents still treated the monument as the center of local pride in the Revolution.
