Charlestown, Massachusetts, in June 1775 was a small peninsula town across the Charles River from Boston, which had been under siege since the fighting at Lexington and Concord in April. Its wharves, shipyards, and fishing trade had supported local families until the war cut off Boston's commerce. On the night of June 16, colonial militia dug earthworks on Breed's Hill, though the battle fought there on June 17 became known as the Battle of Bunker Hill. British regulars under General William Howe launched several assaults up the slopes before taking the position, at a heavy cost to both sides. Fire spread through Charlestown during the fighting, and the ruined town soon became one of the war's most widely recognized images.
