From an elevated vantage point, this Detroit Publishing Company glass negative takes in Charlestown and the granite obelisk of the Bunker Hill Monument. The monument commemorates the battle of June 17, 1775, an early engagement of the Revolutionary War, and it was dedicated in 1843 after years of fundraising. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial photographic firm that documented American cities and landscapes, made the plate sometime between about 1890 and 1910, when the monument was a major draw for visitors to Boston.
