The cruiser New York sits at the left edge of this view of the Charlestown Navy Yard taken from the water, so the warship anchors the composition as much as the piers do. The yard, founded in 1800 on the Charlestown peninsula across the Charles River from downtown Boston, was one of the country's oldest federal shipbuilding and repair facilities, and in the 1900s it served a growing fleet of steel warships. The negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which recorded American cities, railroads and landscapes from about 1890 to 1924.
