Franklin Park, the large Boston park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted's firm and the largest piece of the city's Emerald Necklace, provides the setting for these tennis courts. The negative is dated about 1906, when the game was spreading from private clubs onto public grounds and cities were adding courts for ordinary residents. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass plate, produced many thousands of views of American towns and landscapes, and its scenes often capture everyday recreation of the period.
