Tennis courts laid out inside Franklin Park show how the city's largest public green space was being used for recreation in the early 1900s. The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux as the largest piece of Boston's Emerald Necklace of connected parkways, and by this period it was giving residents space for games as well as walks. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative, sold views of American towns and sites to travelers and publishers, so the picture also records how a Boston park looked to outside audiences of its day.
