The building in this view stands within Franklin Park, the largest of Boston's parks in the Emerald Necklace, a chain of green spaces linked by Frederick Law Olmsted and his firm. The park was laid out in the 1880s on land in Roxbury and Dorchester, and by about 1906 it was a popular place for city residents to spend leisure time. The picture was made as a large glass plate negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American towns, parks and landscapes for travel publications in the early 1900s. Its careful framing gives a sense of how civic buildings were set within the park's landscape during that period.
