Visitors crowd the railings in front of the bear cages at the Franklin Park Zoo in Jamaica Plain, a neighborhood on Boston's southwest side. The zoo grew out of Franklin Park, the large public green that Frederick Law Olmsted's firm laid out as part of Boston's park system, and it opened in the years just before the First World War. Animal exhibits like these drew city families on weekend outings, and the scene shows how such a visit looked in that era. The c1914 date comes from an old caption card and has not been checked against other sources.
