Golf links at Franklin Park in southern Boston show the game spreading onto public land around the turn of the twentieth century. Frederick Law Olmsted's firm laid out the park in the 1880s as the largest piece of Boston's connected park system, and its open fields gave golfers room that the city's crowded streets did not. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, produced views of American towns, parks and recreation spots for travelers and postcard buyers, and this one is catalogued around 1906. The rolling, open landscape in the frame reflects Olmsted's preference for scenery that looked natural.
