Stone steps climb through the landscape of Franklin Park, one of the largest parks in Boston and the southern anchor of Frederick Law Olmsted's Emerald Necklace. The stairway is one of the park's built features, the kind of masonry that Olmsted and his successors used to guide walkers over rough, sloping ground while keeping the naturalistic setting intact. The glass negative was made around 1906 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American towns, parks and scenery for sale as views.
