Nix's Mate is a small rocky island in Boston Harbor, and the beacon standing on it sets this view apart from the city scenes around it. Local tradition holds that the island takes its name from a mate hanged there in the 1700s, with his body left on display as a warning to sailors. The beacon served as a daymark, helping ships steer past the shoals in the channel. The Detroit Publishing Company, which likely made this glass negative around 1906, photographed American harbors and landscapes widely for commercial distribution.
