The drawing shows the front of the Boston Athenaeum's earlier home on Franklin Place, a detail that sets it apart from the city views that usually hang beside it. Architectural drawings of this kind were used to plan and record buildings, so the partial elevation here is a working document rather than a picture meant for the public. The sheet is in ink, graphite, and wash, and its verso carries calculations and a provenance stamp, which suggests it passed through more than one set of hands. It has sometimes been credited to Charles Bulfinch, the Boston architect of the period, though that attribution has not been confirmed.
