This mezzotint takes Benjamin Franklin as its subject, and its title line records both his birth in Boston on January 17, 1706 and his death in Philadelphia on April 17, 1790. The image reproduces a painting by T.H. Matteson, engraved by Henry S. Sadd, and was printed in New York City in 1847 for the New York Albion, a weekly paper. Mezzotint suited this kind of reproduction because its soft tonal gradations could approximate the look of oil paint, which made portraits of national figures available to readers who could never see the originals.
