Dorchester Heights, the hill south of Boston harbor, gives this aquatint its vantage point, looking down over the city and its waterfront. The hill is best remembered for March 1776, when Continental forces under George Washington fortified it and set up guns that threatened British positions in the harbor, leading to the British evacuation of Boston that month. Robert Havell, an English-born engraver who had worked on the large bird's-eye views of American cities, made the print in New York around 1841, and it was colored by hand, a common finish for views sold to a middle-class market.
