Charlestown Navy Yard, on the Boston side of the Charles River, was one of the oldest naval shipyards in the country, founded in 1800, and this view from about 1905 records it at the height of its working life. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the United States to document towns, landscapes and industry for color-tinted postcards and catalogs, made the glass negative from which the image was printed. Worth noticing is the yard's dense waterfront of docks and buildings, a reminder of how much shipbuilding and repair happened there in the decades before the yard closed in 1974.
