The view looks across the harbor at Boston from the east, with Bunker Hill rising behind the town, a vantage that was popular with engravers of the 1830s who wanted to show a city defined by its waterfront. The plate follows a drawing by W.H. Bartlett, an English topographical artist who traveled widely and sketched American scenes for British publishers, and it was engraved by C. Cousen for issue by George Virtue in London in 1839. Bunker Hill, site of the 1775 battle of the American Revolution, gave the composition its historical weight, and the harbor crowded with masts shows how central shipping was to the city's economy at the time.
