This pencil drawing is a bird's-eye survey taken from the fort at Roxbury, looking across the water toward Charlestown and Bunker Hill. The Massachusetts State House, Charles Bulfinch's statehouse of 1798 on Beacon Hill, is among the subjects the artist chose to show above the city's rooftops. Roxbury's fortifications date to the siege of Boston in 1775, when American troops built works on the high ground to watch the British across the harbor. The view was drawn in 1828, while the Bunker Hill monument was still under construction, so it records the Charlestown side of the battlefield before the granite obelisk rose there.
