Fort Hill, a rise on Boston's waterfront, gives this etching its commanding view across the harbour. It was issued as part of the *Atlantic Neptune*, the naval atlas that Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres prepared for the Royal Navy and published in London between 1777 and 1781. British troops held Boston from 1775 until their evacuation in March 1776, so the view shows a town and anchorage under military control at the start of the Revolutionary War. Its link to the Navy's charts makes it useful for seeing how officers read the harbour when planning operations along the coast.
