This is one of the earliest known aerial photographs, a view of Boston taken from a balloon above the city. The record credits Samuel A. King and J.W. Black, and the title dates the original to 1861, though accounts commonly place the balloon ascent in October 1860. King was the balloonist, and Black made the exposure, which required hauling bulky wet-plate equipment aloft. This 1903 print reproduces the photograph as it appeared in *The Photographic Miniature*, so it shows the image as seen by a turn-of-the-century audience rather than the original glass negative.
