Few episodes in colonial Boston drew more attention in later schoolbooks than the August 1765 riots against the Stamp Act. This wood engraving is recorded as an illustration in Ellis's *Youth's History of the United States*, a late nineteenth-century text for young readers. That August, a mob destroyed the house of Lieutenant Governor Thomas Hutchinson and attacked the home of Andrew Oliver, the man named to distribute the stamps. The print therefore shows how a later generation chose to picture colonial protest against British taxation.
