The front page of the Boston Gazette for March 11, 1771, is set apart by its subject: a story marking the first anniversary of the Boston Massacre. On March 5, 1770, British soldiers fired into a crowd on King Street, killing five colonists, and the event quickly became a rallying point for patriot writers. The engraved masthead at the top adds the kind of ornament common on colonial papers of the period. Seeing the Gazette devote its front page to the anniversary shows how a local newspaper kept the incident in public memory a year after it happened.
