Four coffins, each marked with a skull and crossbones, stand side by side in this woodcut, a stark choice of image for a newspaper that wanted readers to remember the dead of the Boston Massacre. The Boston Gazette ran it on March 12, 1770, about a week after British soldiers fired into a crowd on King Street and killed five men, including Crispus Attucks. The names Samuel Gray, Samuel Maverick, James Caldwell and Attucks are the ones the subject list records, and the picture turns them into a sober funeral procession on paper. Its spare design, with no crowd or soldiers shown, leaves the grief and the anger to the viewer.
