Few streets show Beacon Hill as clearly as Mount Vernon Street, which climbs the hill's north slope past rows of brick townhouses built for Boston's merchant families in the early 1800s. This view, taken near the head of Hancock Street, looks across the rooftops toward the hill's crown, where Charles Bulfinch's State House had stood since 1798 and where a beacon pole once gave the hill its name. The record dates the print to about 1858 and associates it with the lithographer J.H. Bufford, though the catalog notes these details are unverified. The street itself is the main draw, a record of the residential neighborhood that the hill's wealthy families built.
