This "Old Boston" lithograph shows Beacon Hill from the spot where the Hancock and Temple Streets reservoir would later stand. It reproduces a drawing J.R. Smith made on site in 1811, so the scene reflects Boston's appearance about four decades before the 1858 printing. The publisher, Smith, Knight & Tappan, issued it as part of a series of nostalgic city views, which were popular with Bostonians who were watching the old landscape change quickly. The hill's crest was later reshaped as the city grew, which gives the view its value as a record of a vanished streetscape.
