Looking up Derne Street, the view climbs toward the crown of Beacon Hill, where the gold dome of the State House marks the top of the slope. Boston's old hilltop streets were built from the late 1700s onward, and this part of the city was a mix of brick townhouses, church spires and narrow lanes that changed slowly over the following century. Color prints of the period like this one were prized for capturing that uneven skyline and the quiet residential character of the neighborhood before the city grew much denser. Notice how the rooflines step up the hill, a reminder of how closely the streets follow the lay of the land.
