Mr. Thurston's house anchors this view of Beacon Hill as seen from Bowdoin Street, a steep approach toward the State House that Charles Bulfinch designed on the hill's summit in the 1790s. Beacon Hill was long one of Boston's most desirable residential neighborhoods, and its brick and clapboard houses on narrow lanes reflect the city's growing prosperity. The shelflist card gives no date and links the print to the name Bufford, possibly the Boston lithographic firm, but that attribution is unverified, so the image is best read as a record of the streetscape.
