This view of Beacon Hill is set on the ground between Hancock and Temple streets, where a city water reservoir was later built, which gives it a vantage most other pictures of the hill lack. J.R. Smith made the original drawing on the spot in 1811, and this color lithograph reproduces it as Plate 5 of the *Old Boston* series, published by Smith, Knight & Tappan in 1858. The Massachusetts State House, designed by Charles Bulfinch and completed in the 1790s, rises above the hill, and the print shows the landscape as it looked before much of the hill was cut down during the nineteenth century.
