Drawn as a conjectural scene rather than a photograph, this color print shows the first granary Boston built, placed in 1715 near what is now the corner of Beacon and Park Streets, on the slope of Beacon Hill above Boston Common. Public granaries stored grain against shortages, a practical concern for a growing colonial port. The image appeared in a May 1939 calendar blotter issued as an advertisement by the First National Bank of Boston, so it reflects 1930s civic pride in the city's origins as much as the colonial past it depicts.
