The Bunker Hill Monument, the granite obelisk rising on Breed's Hill in Charlestown, is the subject here, and this carte de visite shows it as it stood in the early 1860s, when the monument was already a familiar landmark of the Boston area. The print was made by the photographer Bryant, whose studio address on Main Street in Charlestown is printed on the back, and it was later pasted into a Civil War-era album compiled by John White Geary, which preserved it among portraits of army officers and other people of the period. Pictures of the monument were sold widely in small card format like this one, so it offers a glimpse of how the site was documented and circulated during the war years.
