Corey Hill, in Brookline, sat on high ground just southwest of Boston, and this view looks outward over the town and its surroundings from that vantage. Because the record names the hilltop itself, the picture reads as a survey of the Boston area seen from above rather than a street scene. Views like this were popular in the nineteenth century, when panoramic landscapes showed residents and visitors how the city's neighborhoods, hills and waterways fit together. Look closely at how the suburbs of Brookline and nearby towns are drawn beside the city, since that spread of settlement is the main point of the scene.
