Swampscott sits on the rocky North Shore coast about 11 miles northeast of Boston, and its title places the view within Essex County, a region of old fishing harbors and seaside towns. The town separated from Lynn in 1852 and grew into a summer resort after rail service made the shore easy to reach from the city. Color views like this one were popular in the late 1800s, when lithographers and publishers produced souvenir scenes that let visitors and armchair travelers see the coast's cliffs, beaches, and hotels. Look closely at the shoreline and the way the artist shows the water and sky, since these prints often reveal how a resort town wanted to be seen.
