The Merchants' Exchange at Boston was a hub of the city's commercial life, where shipowners, brokers and traders gathered to close deals and trade news of arriving vessels. This view turns the viewer's eye toward the building's street face and the busy traffic around it, showing how central the exchange was to the port's economy. Boston's exchange buildings of the nineteenth century were built to house this kind of trade, and prints of them were popular with merchants and visitors who wanted a record of the city's waterfront prosperity. The color treatment adds a sense of the period's street life, with its carriages, pedestrians and bustling commerce.
