Titled "Ye old way," this color lithograph from about 1885 was produced by Geo. H. Walker & Co., a Boston firm that issued many popular prints in the 1880s. The mock-archaic spelling of its title suggests a comic take on older grooming habits, a theme that suited the period's taste for humorous scenes of everyday life. Barbershops were busy social spaces in the late nineteenth century, where men came for a shave, a haircut and conversation, so the subject would have been immediately familiar to viewers. The record credits W.A. George with the copyright.
