Unlike many views of mill towns from the same decades, this lithograph focuses on a single works: the Assabet Manufacturing Company in Maynard, Massachusetts, a textile town built along the Assabet River west of Boston. Charles H. Vogt drew the scene in the bird's-eye style that was popular in the 1870s, showing the factory buildings, yards, and surrounding streets from an elevated vantage point as if seen from above. Published in Boston by J.C. Hazen, it was made to promote the company and to show prospective buyers and investors the scale of its operations. The print is useful today for seeing how a nineteenth-century mill complex was laid out.
