Few early views of the Brandywine carry a caption as revealing as this one, which wrongly places the mill in New Jersey. The Brandywine Creek in northern Delaware powered a dense string of gristmills and other water-driven works in the early 1800s, and this pen-and-watercolor drawing captures that working valley before large factories transformed the region. Its subject headings link the scene to Matthew Newkirk and his local surroundings, offering a personal thread through the landscape. The mislabeling is worth noticing, since early American views were often captioned from memory rather than checked on site.
