This color lithograph presents the gas works Robert T. Coverdale built as an engineer and contractor in Cincinnati, Ohio, and its title advertises both his trade and the plant's daily output of gas, measured in cubic feet per day. Strobridge & Co., a Cincinnati lithography firm, produced the print around 1868, when coal gas was the main fuel for city street lighting and for lamps in homes and businesses. Plates like this were often used to promote an engineer's work to city councils and private companies, so the view shows the generating and purifying equipment as a source of civic pride. Coverdale copyrighted the image in his own name, which suggests he meant it to circulate under his firm's reputation.
