Rubber footwear helped make New Haven, Connecticut, a center of American manufacturing, and L. Candee & Co. was one of the firms that worked in the trade. The title, which reads like a company banner, says the firm was established in 1842 and made all kinds of rubber boots and shoes. That line of goods depended on the vulcanization process Charles Goodyear developed around 1839, which made rubber stable across temperature extremes. The record gives no date for the print, and the associated name Punderson & Crisand on its shelflist card is unverified.
