Sir John Walter Huddleston appears here as a "future judge," a caption that hints at the legal career he was building when Vanity Fair ran the portrait in 1874. Carlo Pellegrini, who signed his work "Ape," drew the figure in his usual style, with a large head and an expressive pose that suggests the sitter's quick manner in court. The lithograph was printed in color by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son and later reissued in the *Vanity Fair Album* volume of statesmen, where it was grouped with other public men of the period. Caricatures like this one were a popular way for Victorian readers to keep track of lawyers, politicians and officials.
